There is a wide variety of power ‘sub-metering’ systems available today. Applications include utility sub-metering, equipment performance monitoring, performance verification and diagnostic evaluations. The output information ranges from a simple kilowatt and kilowatt hour data to power wave capturing in the smallest fraction of a second. Natural gas, propane and other fuels are commonly sub-metered both at the main service and at individual processes. It is very important to know the physical conditions such as temperature, pressure and flow rate when selecting a gas or fuel meter. For example, for many natural gas metering applications, thermal mass, differential pressure and turbine meters are excellent choices. Steam flow rate is critical to many processes. The steam flow rate can be metered at the main or (with slightly less accuracy) at the condensate return. In many cases, steam metering has one of the shortest paybacks of all metering systems. Both process and steam heating system leaks are simply expensive.
